Marchena Island given clean bill of health
In early October a team of wardens from the Galapagos National Park visited Marchena, one of the most pristine of the Galapagos Islands to check that there were no goats there. Goats were eradicated from the island in 2002 after a 20 year campaign. The wardens found no sign of goats. They also checked for signs of the Little Red Fire Ant Wasmannia auropunctata which was recently eradicated from the island, having been accidentally introduced by visiting scientists and park wardens. Again the news was good, no fire ants!
